1. Don’t say “No Gifts”. Many people want to give a gift, are going to give you a gift whether you ask for one or not, and often feel bad if you don’t give them some idea what you want. If you truly do not want gifts, pick a charity that people can donate to.
2. Be practical when registering. Brides go crazy and put everything in the store on the list and don’t pay attention to price tags. Make sure you have a variety of low, medium and high priced items, with more in the medium to low range. A person of means can always buy two smaller gifts if they can’t find a larger, expensive one they like but someone with limited funds cannot afford an expensive gift and will feel bad without choices in their budget.
3. Asking for CASH. Personally I think it is ok to ask for cash…why ask people to get you things you really don’t need or want…and cash is one size fits all. Unfortunately, some people get insulted when people ask for cash as a gift. If you are going to ask for cash, two good options are to ask for gift cards to the store you registered at or to ask for cash for a specific reason, i.e. we are saving up for our first home.
