Here are some costs/problems brides forget about when making decorations themselves:
1. The cost of the decoration is not just the price of the materials, it is also the cost of your time, gas to drive from hobby store to hobby store, shipping if you order online, cost of practice/mistake pieces, etc
2. Many brides think they can go on craigslist and sell these decorations after the wedding to re-coup your costs. Remember, the value of used decorations is small, you have to deal with people coming to your house to look at them, and you have to store them until the sell. Every day we buy items off craigslist for our shop at pennies on the dollar after the bride has unsuccessfully tried to sell them for months.
3. Be honest, unless you are really crafty, it always looks easier to make than it actually is, and they rarely turn out like the picture you have in your minds.
4. Often brides buy materials over time and this leads them to buy more than they need, make multiple trips to stores, or buy items they don’t really need just because they were neat or on sale.
The simple solution, rent your decorations. Often rentals are the same or less as the price of making them, you can truly get what you want, made by a professional, and you don’t have to get rid of them after the wedding, you just return them to where you rented them. Remember, even if a rental is the same price, or even 10-15% more than, the cost of what you could make them for, you are still probably better off renting
